Importance of anchoring furniture

Anchoring Furniture

Anchoring your furniture, electronics, and appliances is very important to keep your family safe. One of the best things we can do as parents take the right steps to make our homes safer for our children. Unfortunately, there is no schooling for parenthood and most things you must self-educate or communicate with other parents. When you think of baby proofing the first thing that comes to mind is placing safety locks on the kitchen cabinets, safety latches, and outlet plugs but you hardly ever hear on the importance of anchoring your furniture.

Most parents have not heard of the term “tip over” which is when an everyday appliance or piece of furniture is knocked over and suddenly transformed into a deadly threat. Roughly half a million tip-over injuries have been identified by the CPSC. According to the CPSC, a child dies every two weeks because of a tip over the incident- most children are under the age of 5. Children are vulnerable because they’re small and rambunctious. Most of the deaths are caused by everyday play like climbing, kicking, jumping, or tugging near/on the furniture. A television falling from a dresser or table it can have the force of about a thousand pounds depending on the height of the furniture. Sadly, these casualties are becoming more and more frequent but it can be prevented by taking the right steps and educating yourself about all the ways you can make your home a safe environment for your growing family.

It is important to remember that furniture safety kits are cheap and easy to find, and can be installed by a professional to prevent tragedies from happening. We cannot be with our kids 24/7 but we can take the extra step to give us peace of mind knowing that our kids are safe within our homes.

Refer to the video below on how little effort it takes for un-anchored furniture to become extremely dangerous.
